You can surf with Saltwater Safari all year round
Those of you who know Pete Smudge Smith will know that he has worked as a coach in the adventure sports industry for more than 20 years. He is a qualified climbing coach, International Mountain Leader and a qualified teacher.
Getting the most out of people in challenging environments is what he has been doing most of his life. A level 2 Surf Coach and Adaptive Surf Coach with the ISA (International Surf Association) and a Level 3 Beginner Surf SUP instructor with the ASI (Academy of Surf Instructors), he will help you understand the sea and this in turn will help you with your surfing.
Ethos
In keeping with our ethos of delivering Saltwater Safari adventures Just For You, we run our surf sessions for individuals or small private group to ensure you enjoy a shared experience with just YOUR friends &/or family.

We do of course guarantee loads of fun in a safe learning environment. Our coaches are all qualified surf coaches and hold a current Surf or Beach Lifeguard / Surf Coach Rescue award.
We expect our coaches to use their observational analysis together with their understanding of your goals and aspirations to provide the basis for your lessons.
Each session we run is bespoke and although it may look similar to other lessons you may see on the beach, we believe in talking to you in order to make each session different and progressive (whatever your level).
Where?
Saltwater Safari has been awarded a licence from Cornwall Council to deliver water-based activities on the beaches of Crooklets and Summerleaze in (Bootiful) Bude and Polzeath Beach.
If your surf lesson is in Bude we will ask you to meet us at the Saltwater Safari trailer in the car park at Crooklets where we will get you kitted up for a surf.
For surf lessons at Polzeath we will bring all the kit to the beach and confirm details of where to meet you depending on the tides.
Beginner Surf Lesson
We will help you succeed using good quality soft boards for learning and offer guidance on what to do to continue improving after your lesson, whether that’s surfing a different board or going to a different beach…
Keeping with guidelines set by Surfing England, we can deliver :
- Lessons for up to 8 people with 1 instructor
- For mixed ability groups or groups with children and adults we generally have 2 instructors.
Progressive Surf Coaching
Booked as a block whether you have never surfed before but, always fancied having a go or have been surfing a while and have hit a plateau, booking a small block of sessions will help you to push your surfing to break through a barrier.
On your own board or borrowing one of our softboards, we will help you to identify and work towards achieving your next surfing goal. Feedback is a massive part of the coaching process and may take place in a local cafe over coffee / back at the trailer.
Reflecting together on your progress and performance during a lesson is the best way to plan further sessions to ensure you keep working towards achieving your surfing goals.

We run all our activities as private sessions Just For You to help you create shared memories with family and friends that will have you reminiscing about your holiday in North Cornwall long after you have returned back home!
In addition, we are affiliated to SLSGB as an Accredited Training Centre for SLSGB Awards and can of course run a training programme to help you / your team learn Surf Rescue Skills without needing to complete an award.
