Stand Up Paddle Boarding
Great for fun, great for fitness!
The popularity of the modern sport of Stand Up Paddle Surfing (SUP) has its origins in the Hawaiian Islands. In the early 1960s it took its name (Beach Boy Surfing) from the Beach Boys of Waikiki who would stand on their long boards and paddle out with outrigger paddles to take pictures of tourists learning to surf. In the early 2000s Hawaiian surfers such as Dave Kalama, and Laird Hamilton started SUP as an alternative way to train when the surf was down
SUP is so versatile it can appeal to anyone whether you want to learn to surf small waves, progress to paddling the open ocean or prefer the idea of a flat-water safari in a harbour, on a lake or down a river or canal. Whichever you choose Saltwater Safari can help you have a great time on your own or with family &/or friends whilst giving your muscles & core stability a great work out!
Beginner’s Flatwater SUP
Our beginner flat-water sessions are delivered on Bude canal where you don’t have to worry about tides or moving water so can focus on finding your SUP feet and looking out for the heron and kingfishers.
We will coach you in the techniques you need to paddle, turn, self-rescue and fall off safely – all part of the fun!
Flatwater SUP Safari
Once you have found your SUP feet and, assuming swell and weather conditions are favourable, we can take you on a flatwater SUP safari, helping you to explore the Camel Estuary or North Cornwall coastline from a totally different and awesome viewpoint.
- Our maximum group size for a Flatwater SUP is 4 people.
Beginner SUP Surfing
If you want a different challenge then surfing an SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) could be your next achievement! It may look like surfing but, is in fact a very different sport with its own ethos. Skills are transferable so if you can already surf you have a good chance of progressing. Catching your first wave on a SUP is epic in its own right – never has catching small waves been so much fun!
- We generally deliver SUP Surf lessons 1:1
- IF surf conditions and number of other water users at a venue allow, we can deliver SUP surf lessons for up to 2 people
