SLSGB Awards
An Affiliated Training Centre for SLSGB since 2019 Saltwater Safari can help you renew / gain / work towards gaining the pre-requisite rescue qualification for your surf coaching &/or Beach Lifeguard career.
We run all our SLSGB Awards for a maximum number of up to 8 candidates and will be happy to run an award for your team, surf school or community surf club. If you are wanting to book on an award course as an individual, please email info@saltwatersafari.co.uk as we can and do run public courses.
If you / your team wish to receive training / a refresher in how to perform rescues and first aid but, do not wish to gain the qualification please get in touch so we can discuss and agree a suitable training programme with you.
Each award includes some pre-course online learning which means that the time spent with Saltwater Safari can be more practical, so you build up your confidence & experience in performing rescues and first aid.
Courses Outline
The main Surf Life Saving GB | Rescue, Safety & First Aid Qualifications (slsgb.org.uk) qualifications are outlined below. We also deliver the associated Proficiency Tests for each of the awards so you can re-qualify with us each year*.
The award content, pre-requisites and ongoing CPD requirements are determined by SLSGB UK not Saltwater Safari and are all competency-based awards.
5-day course plus pre-course online learning. Course units and practical work include:
- Beach Environment
- Beach Patrolling
- Working Practices
- Communications
- Basic Life Support
- First Aid
- Pool Based Practical
- Foundation Tube Rescuer
- Foundation Ocean Board Rescuer
- Supplementary Oxygen Administration
- Spinal Extraction
- Radio Communications
5-day course plus pre-course online learning. Course units and practical work include:
- Beach Environment
- Beach Patrolling
- Working Practices
- Communications
- Basic Life Support
- First Aid
- Pool Based Practical
- Foundation Tube Rescuer
- Foundation Ocean Board Rescuer
3-day course plus pre-course online learning. Course units and practical work include:
- Aquatic Safety Management for a Surf Coach
- Working Practices for a Surf Coach Lifesaver
- The Beach & Surf Environment
- Basic Life Support
- Level 1 First Aid
- Paediatric Life Support
- Level 2 First Aid
- Tube Rescuer
- Coach safety and rescue techniques
- Casualty rescue and care techniques operating in an aquatic environment.
Must Dos / must haves...
- The awards also stipulate a pre-requisite open water swim competency and fitness level demonstrated in the form of a Timed swim (in a pool) of:
- 400m in under 8 minutes for the NVBLQ and Surf Coach Rescue Awards
- 400m in under 7 minutes 30 seconds for the Surf Lifeguard Award
- AND a 100m run-swim-run.
- To enrol on any of the awards you must be a member of SLSGB. To keep your qualification valid, you must renew your membership with SLSGB each year. Become a member – Surf Life Saving GB (slsgb.org.uk)
- The initial award is valid for 2 years and then needs to be renewed annually by completing the relevant Proficiency Test Award. In addition, you will be required to complete an assessed CPR test mid-term.
- You must be able to demonstrate open water swimming competency, confidence and fitness sufficient to undertake a rescue on a board as defined in the Guidance – Clarification of ‘Rescue Equipment’ on the award specification
